JANUARY 1: New Year's Day
This Holiday was easy to celebrate. Why? Because it was making this resolution. I didn't really go big, just wrote it down and a few other less fun resolutions (you know the ones: save money, lose weight, etc.)
JANUARY 2: Sci-Fi Day
I'll admit it, I wasn't totally sure I was going to commit to this holiday thing yet. I didn't go big, so I must've gone home. I ended up just wearing a Darth Vader shirt and counting that.
JANUARY 3: Drinking Straw Day
Now this is where things get fun! I know what you're thinking. Drinking straws? How can they be fun? This holiday was one of my favorites so far, because it was the first holiday I decided to go all out for. I'd worked the morning, so I had the whole night free. When I got off I ran to the 7/11 next to the Trolley (I'm a waitress at a restaurant called the Art City Trolley) to see if they had those fancy Slurpee straws. To my pleasant surprise I found these:
Sour Straws! Putting them in lemonade was like drinking a Warhead!
I grabbed six red and six blue and ran back to the Trolley in excitement and went up to each coworker asking "red or blue?" After their questioning reply I would hand them a sour straw, exclaim "HAPPY NATIONAL DRINKING STRAW DAY!" and walk away.
This excitement had hyped me up and I headed to Walmart to see what other drinking straw wonders I could find. Soon my arms were full of stainless steel straws complete with a straw scrubber, straws with funny plastic lips attached, color changing curly straws, heart shaped straws, build your own straw kits (with multi-direction attachments), and chocolate and strawberry milk straws. Who knew there were so many fun straws? I wanted to find a straw hat like in that episode of Spongebob (He's number one) and I found one, but didn't end up buying it because I was already buying so many cool straws.
Here's the picture of me in the hat, it was pretty great, but not quite number one. Plus I didn't need a dead zombie fish haunting me. Or Mr. Krabs.
I then went to my sister, Jessica, and her husband, Rocky's, apartment and gave them some straws so they could celebrate too. Then I went over to my guy friends' apartment and let them each pick out some straws and we went to Swig so we could use them. All in all, National Drinking Straw Day was definitely a success.
JANUARY 4: National Spaghetti Day
Ahhh Spaghetti. My favorite food. I love Spaghetti, so this was definitely a day to celebrate. Unfortunately, I discovered that day that the Old Spaghetti Factory had gone out of business, so I couldn't go eat there, but it was okay. I persevered. I went with my parents to the Pizza Factory, and although "spaghetti" isn't in their name, it was still delicious.
JANUARY 5: Whipped Cream Day
The question I woke up with on whipped cream day was how I could "go big" with it. I decided to do more than just your ordinary squirt whipped cream (though I would have that too). I ended up making homemade lemon whipped cream which I put over fresh berries and topped with your classic Reddiwhip.
JANUARY 6: Cuddle Up Day
My friends and I decided to celebrate by cuddling up and watching a scary movie. We watched some movie on Netflix about a kid whose dreams become reality.
JANUARY 7: Tempura Day
This one was pretty fun, because I decided to try my hand at making my own tempura veggies. I made it over at my friends' apartment and we had different dipping sauces. We fried onions, carrots, sweet potatoes, and zucchini. It was surprisingly easy and pretty delicious!
All in all week one was a success! Drinking straw day was probably my favorite, which shows how things that may seem uninteresting can be fun if you make it so.
