Week 6: Fro-Yo, Flannel, and Fettuccine

FEBRUARY 5: Nutella Day
I love it when it when food that makes good treats falls on Monday nights, because then I don't have to think of a treat for FHE. Nutella is pretty delicious in all forms, but for Nutella Day I ended up making chocolate cupcakes with Nutella frosting. Here's the recipe for the frosting, because it ended up being really good:

1 c. unsalted butter
3/4 c. Nutella
1/8 tsp salt
2 c. confectioners sugar

I ended up using a bit more salt, because the frosting was VERY sweet. I doubled the recipe and it made a ton!

FEBRUARY 6: Frozen Yogurt Day
Okay, I'll admit it, I've never been a big fan of fro-yo. Here's my problem: I pick out some delicious looking flavor and head to the toppings bar and see all these fun toppings and, all of a sudden, I can't resist putting a bit of everything. Peanuts? Yes! Those weird boba things that taste like a gummy bear melted and was reincarnated as a bath bead? Why not?! Cheesecake bites that have been sitting out for a questionable amount of time? Sure! Before I know it I'll have more toppings than actual fro-yo. It's a smorgasbord of sweet and salty and slimy and gooey and it just does not go together. I always end up with soup that looks like it was made by a five year old. So you might say "Mandi, why don't you just not put any toppings on it?" or "Limit yourself to one to two," but I just can't. I tell myself I will every time, but then I get to the toppings bar and it's just too fun. Besides who can resist those mini Reeses that are the size of m&m's? You can't find those anywhere else. So fro-yo, not really my thing. I'll eat a couple of bites and throw it out.

So Fro-Yo Day comes along and my options are pretty limited since Spoon It Up shut down. I ended up going to Farr's Fresh in Orem with Duffy and they only had two options that were actually frozen yogurt: coconut and banana, and coconut was sold out. I've never been a fan of banana flavored things, so this was how I felt about it:

Yeah not super pleased. But it was a holiday and I had a resolution to keep. Banana fro-yo it was. And really, I couldn't taste much of the banana anyways because of my toppings problem.

FEBRUARY 7: Fettuccine Alfredo Day
I was feeling pumped about this day, because Fettuccine Alfredo is much better than banana fro-yo. Brennan, Craig, Brey and I went to Olive Garden for dinner and got variations of Fettuccine Alfredo.

FEBRUARY 8: Kite Flying Day
I'm not quite sure who thought it was a good idea to put Kite Flying Day in February, because to me kite flying is a summer activity, but I'm not here to argue, I'm just here to celebrate. After I got out of class Duffy and I went to Walmart and bought some cheap kites. We able to find Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, and Spider-Man kites and they were all less than a dollar. The cheapness of the kites probably factored into our struggles later, but we'll get to that.

Duffy and I grabbed her roommate and then headed over to my friends' apartment to drag them on our adventure. I think some of my friends were a bit hesitant about flying kites at 10 o'clock at night, but I convinced them all to go, because this holiday thing is more than just flying kites, it's about getting out and doing weird things and having fun.

We went to Rock Canyon Park and ran around like fools for awhile trying to get the kites to fly. We weren't very successful, but it was still fun in a stupid way. The minimal wind and the crappy kites didn't help our success rate. I tried to fly the kite out the window of Parker's jeep as we drove away, but no success. Next time I try kite flying I'll find a nice beach on a warm summer's day with a sufficient amount of wind and a quality kite.

I have to commend my friends for being good sports about everything and still supporting me in this holiday thing, even with activities that are doomed to fail. They're the real winners here.

Here's the video from Duffy's snapchat of us getting our kites ready to fly:

FEBRUARY 9: Pizza Day/Bagel Day
There were two pretty great holidays today, so I had to celebrate them both. My grand plan was to have a bagel for breakfast, pizza for lunch, and a pizza bagel for dessert. Considering life is pretty busy, it didn't go as neat as I planned, but when does anything ever work out exactly to plan?

I went to Einstein Bagels for breakfast and got bagels for me and my mom, and took her her's to work. I was still full from that by lunchtime and so I ended up going to work without eating, so no pizza for lunch. It was a pretty busy shift and I didn't get out until late, so my coworker Evan and I headed across the street to Two Jacks Pizza for dinner after we got off. I didn't get to do the whole pizza bagel thing, but that's okay, because after work chats over pizza with one of my favorite coworkers was a perfect way to end pizza day.

FEBRUARY 10: Flannel Day
It was national flannel day so most of my friends and I wore flannel shirts, though I'm not sure all of them did it on purpose!

FEBRUARY 11: White Shirt Day
Conveniently white shirt day fell on a Sunday, so all of my friends who were guys were already going to be wearing white shirts, but my Sunday white shirt stash is limited. Luckily I planned ahead and my mom and I went to the Hobble Creek Barn Boutique the day before where she got me a new white shirt that went perfectly with the Star Wars pencil skirt she got me. Yes, I am a nerd, but it was a pretty cool skirt. There's Darth Vader and Stormtrooper helmets, and then R2 and BB-8's all over it, but they're blended in with a bunch of flowers so it's kinda of subtly Star Wars at first glance. It's pretty awesome. But, enough about my Star Wars skirt, Star Wars day isn't until May 4th.

This week had some great holidays, but by the end of if I was really excited for the next week where I'd hit my first big holiday: Valentine's Day! If I was going to celebrate all the small holidays I had to go all out for the big ones!
