Week 17: With Great Holidays Comes Great Celebrations

APRIL 23: World Book Day / National Picnic Day
Two of my favorite things: Reading and Picnics. Also, two things that go very well together. For World Book Day I started out by going to my favorite book store, Pioneer Book, to buy a new book to read. I've been a featured customer there this month, and got my own shelve of my picks in the store, so it was cool to go check that out!

After I went and bought a pretty good picnic spread at Reams. I got fancy cheeses, crackers, bread, spinach dip, prosciutto, grapes, and lemonade in glass bottles. I then went over to my parent's house and my mom and I had a picnic in their backyard!

It was a perfect combo of holidays and made for a pretty great day!

APRIL 24: Fashion Forward Day
Conveniently, Fashion Forward Day fell on the day the suit I've been working on for my tailoring class this semester was due. I've spent over 150 hours on this suit coat, and it's been quite the project. From spending hours making sure the pattern would fit my friend Parker (who I was making it for) perfectly, to pad stitching the interior of the suit, I've enjoyed the long (and very educating) process of making this suit coat. I spent twelve hours finishing hand sewing in the lining on Fashion Forward Day.

Don't worry, the white thread came out, it was just helping favor the roll line on the lapels and collar. When I went up to Tissu (a fancy fabric store in Salt Lake) with Parker to pick out the lining, he ended up having me choose. When I picked out the red he said that he could tell that I wanted that one, and it was true! Though blue is my favorite color, I feel like everytime you put red in something it's making a statement. From the bottom of Louboutins to the classic red lip, when choosing red, you're choosing to be bold.

I also really liked the look of the grey buttons on the houndstooth. Sewing the suit jacket is the most work I've ever put into one project, and I'm very proud.

APRIL 25: Hug a Plumber Day / Secretary Appreciation Day / Denim Day
It seemed very funny to me that Hug and Plumber Day and Secretary Appreciation Day both fell on the same day because my dad is a Plumber and my mom is a Secretary.

Besides owning RootMaster Sewer and Drain Cleaning, my dad is also a Vice Principal at Westlake High School, and he works extremely hard. I love my dad, he's one of the most charismatic, funny, and generous guys I know. I got my spontaneity, randomness, and overall goofiness from him. Everyone he meets not only likes him, but he also inspires and encourages many of people, students and adults alike, to do more with their lives every single day. I think that's amazing.

My mom may only be five feet tall, but she is a giant in how amazing she is. She instilled in me from the time that I was a little girl that in every situation it is always better to be kind. Though there were times she had to remind me, it is a truth that has made my life a happier, better thing knowing. Because of her I learned that if people only remember you by one thing, and that thing being: "she was kind" then you have done well. My mom is amazing at finding the small things people need, like remembering to drop off Diet Cokes at the home of a friend every year on her birthday, buying flowers for the those in need of cheering, or buying me random little gifts like Darth Vader Chapstick. She always notices the small things, and in the end that makes a big difference in lives around her everywhere she goes. Her impact is more than she even knows.

Somehow the picture is upside down and I have literally no idea how to flip in right, so until I figure it out I'm going to leave it. It was also National Denim Day, hence the double denim.

All in all, I'm so lucky to have two amazing parents who inspire me to be more kind, more generous, and just be more. They are the best parents in the world and I'm extremely grateful for them. They have always supported me, through changing my major four times, through my life rule of stopping anytime I see a merry-go-round at a park and going on it, through this crazy new years resolution of celebrating a different holiday everyday. They've been with me through the good and the bad, and I have never once doubted their love for me. If I could give the world one lesson I have learned from my parents it is this: Believe in yourself. Aim high and in aiming high take the higher route to get there. In the end you can do great amazing things, but the most amazing thing you can do is impact the lives around you for the better. Ghandi wasn't wrong when he said "Be the change you want to see in the world." In the end people matter more than any amount of money, more than any status, more than any cool toy or gadget. People matter. It doesn't matter if people are rude to you. It doesn't even really matter what people think of you. I'm not saying be a doormat, because letting people use and abuse you is hurting them in the long run, and also, you deserve better than that, but if you are always kind in every situation what's the worst anyone can say about you? That you were too nice? That you smiled too much? And even if people say things about you that aren't true, then the people who really know you will know your nature and the kind of person you are and they won't believe it.You can do so many things to make the world a better place, no matter your background, no matter your circumstance, no matter what kind of person you think you are. You might say to yourself "I'm just not that person," but you can be. Dream big, believe in yourself, and don't forget to be kind.

APRIL 26: Pretzel Day
For Pretzel Day I went to the mall and got Pretzel Time.

APRIL 27: Arbor Day
What do you do on Arbor Day? You plant a tree! Well where would I plant a tree? That was the problem. I petitioned with my parents to plant a tree in their backyard, but they already had trees everywhere they wanted one. I went to Sunroc and walked around pondering what to do when I found it: the perfect solution. They were selling miniature lemon trees that were described as "the perfect patio plant." I bought one and my mom helped me plant in a pot on the backyard patio. Now can a lemon tree survive in Utah? I'm not so sure about that, but if not, at least I celebrated the holiday. Here's a picture of my cute little lemon tree:

APRIL 28: Superhero Day
I love Superheros! My personal favorite is Spider-Man. Here's a picture of me from the Avenger's Premiere two days before (why couldn't that day have been Superhero Day???) :

I mean my workouts always go better when I'm wearing my Spider-Man sports bra:

And I've worn my Spidyshoes to every Spider-Man and most Marvel premieres since high school:

Needless to say, when you say Superhero I can be dressed up from head to toe (shoes AND socks) right down to my Spidyundies!

Unfortunately, on that day I was working a double, so my Superhero gear was limited. It was a long, gruelling day at work, so when I came home tired and yet to be successful in celebrating the holiday, Brey and I played some computer game that made you feel like a Superhero!

APRIL 29: International Dance Day
For International Dance Day my friends and I had a random, impromptu, 5 minute dance party. It was short, but pretty fun.

All in all, my favorite holiday this week was Picnic/Book Day. Those were some pretty great, pretty Mandi holidays. My favorite part of the week was the Infinity War Premiere though. I loved the movie, and as always, Spider-Man killed it!
